About this deal

I have heard of people trying to achieve this feat by putting a Raspberry Pi or Arduino between the keyboard and PC as a protocol converter. But I don't know of any "How To" guide for this.

keyboard to USB ibm pc - How can I connect a DIN plug keyboard to USB

Typically if an adapter is supplied with a keyboard, it will be one of these "wired through" connectors because it's much cheaper to build a keyboard that speaks both protocols than it is to build a keyboard that speaks just one and an entirely separate electronic system to convert the protocols. PS/2 to USB Converter Cutting the PS/2 connector off your USB-PS/2 adaptor and soldering the wires directly to the DIN plug - in the hope that the voltage loss is reduced and so the flakiness you describe goes away is very risky. Also, the protocol chip may be in the PS/2 plug! The second type talks the AT protocol on one side and the USB protocol on the other, being essentially itself a small computer that converts between the two. These will often look a little bit larger, but not always: Keyboards are pretty universal and can work with any desktop, laptop, or portable computer (PC or Mac) with the required keyboard port. When you plug a keyboard into a computer, it should immediately start working. With some more advanced keyboards with special keys or features, those features may not work until the software is installed. If the software is not compatible with your computer or operating system, you can continue to use the basic keyboard functions without the special features. If nothing on the keyboard works, you'll need to troubleshoot the keyboard with one of the links mentioned below. Can I plug my PC keyboard into my Apple computer? Vertical mice realigning the wrist to a more natural ‘handshake’ position, transferring movement onto the more powerful shoulder muscles.

This factsheet provides details of some of the alternative keyboard, mouse and other pointing devices available. It also gives information on adaptations you can make to standard keyboards and mice. There are so many choices and variations, we cannot cover every single piece of equipment in this factsheet. Articulating wrist supports clamp to the tabletop and are a more specialist support typically in instances where there are difficulties supporting the weight of the arms. Most monitors don't have any ports or places to connect (insert) a keyboard, so you usually connect a keyboard to the computer (tower). If your monitor has USB ports and a USB cable going from the monitor to the computer, a keyboard can connect to the monitor. If you have an All-in-One computer, the keyboard connects to it, which some may mistake as the monitor. Can I plug any keyboard into my computer?

There are several accessible gaming controllers available such as Microsoft’s Xbox adaptive controller. The controller inputs can be ‘mapped’ to a person’s preferences and used alongside the standard controller allowing disabled and non-disabled gamers to compete at the same level. 7. Other equipment I have a wonderful IBM Model M keyboard, which has the best key action of all keyboards I ever used. The problem is it has the big round 5-pin DIN connector used in AT PCs. I would suggest: Use a USB-RS232 adaptor and wire the DIN plug to a DB25 or DB9 RS232. The keyboard will then appear to the PC as being on a standard COM port. You then write a keyboard driver for your new PC that converts the data stream from the old keyboard. You may be able to then redirect COM1 to STDIN. Because your old AT keyboard talks the AT (PS/2) protocol only, you must use the second type of adapter. Anything that came with a keyboard is most likely the first type of adapter. Anything without a second connector for a mouse is probably the first type of adapter, unless you have some evidence otherwise.More contoured are a further development of the split concept. These place the finger keys into two cupped depressions at shoulder width, with function keys set in-between for use with the thumbs.

For more information on voice recognition see My Computer My Way; Talking to your device. We also have a factsheet; Voice Recognition - An Overview. Arm or wrist pads placed in front of the keyboard can be helpful when resting from typing and can help to reduce discomfort and strain. You can also get wrist ‘donuts’ that are worn around the wrists like bracelets and provide support wherever you are working. Some more advanced USB keyboards (e.g., gaming USB keyboard) have two USB cables. One of these cables is for the keyboard, and the other is for USB port(s) on the keyboard for other USB devices. If you only need the keyboard, only one of these cables can be connected. Connecting a wireless keyboard Other equipment such as monitor-raisers and monitor arms allow you to raise the height of a screen. Laptop stands can also be helpful but may require you to have a separate keyboard and mouse. Many tablet manufacturers are beginning to produce a pen or ‘stylus’ as another means of interacting with the tablet and will allow you to make handwritten notes. If the IBM Model M keyboard is one of the ones that uses the AT protocol, you may be able to use a passive 5-pin to PS/2 adapter, chained with an active PS/2 to USB converter such as the Belkin F5U119. Chording keyboards (like the Cykey shown here) only have a few keys that you press in combination (like chords on a piano) to generate letters, numbers and other keys. They work well for one-handed users with independent movement in their fingers. Writing a USB driver on your new PC to bypass the USB protocol is probably impossible as the USB ports are likely to be driven by a dedicated chip. Wireless keyboards have a power switch on the bottom of the keyboard that allows them to be turned on and off. If the keyboard is not detected, make sure the power switch is turned to the on position. Also, if your wireless keyboard uses removable batteries, make sure known good batteries are in the keyboard. Tablets can also be mounted on flexible arms viewing comfort, but this is not always practical, as they are normally controlled with the touchscreen. Lap trays and other supports Ergonomic keyboards are designed to promote a better typing position for your hands and wrists and therefore reduce the chance of strains and discomfort that can ultimately lead to significant issues such as Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). Ergonomic keyboards ‘split’ the keyboard in two, placing each half on a curve so your arms are at a more comfortable, relaxed angle when typing. A separate number pad is normally used with a compact keyboard and can be moved out of the way when not needed. It can also be placed either side of the keyboard, which can be helpful for left-handed users. Keyboards with larger keys Because a keyboard should work without installing any additional software, there isn't anything that can be reinstalled or uninstalled. If your keyboard is not working or recognized, try disconnecting the cable from the computer and reconnecting the cable. If this does not help or reset the keyboard, see the following links.Compact keyboards, as their name suggests, are smaller keyboards. The actual key sizes are quite similar to a standard laptop keyboard and, like a laptop, space is saved by removing the number pad (this can be separate, or some have one that slides out when needed). Switches work well with cause and effect programmes that require simple choices but are in no means limited to this; skilled operators have few restrictions to what they can do. There are two very different types of converters you might be dealing with in this situation. Wire Converter Bar mice are positioned directly in front of the keyboard and have a ‘bar’ that slides left and right and rolls for up and down movement. The position of the bar allows it to be operated with your thumbs and keeps your hands on or close to the keyboard. The easiest (PnP) approach is definely using two adapters. The first one should be a USB to PS/2 (miniDIN) adapter; This one needs to be an active adapter, such as this one:
