About this deal

Of course, that’s a different beast of a watch, and the more I use it, the more I realize there’s really not much real-world overlap with either the Fenix 6 or Instinct. After all, it only has a single sport mode: Outdoor run, and no method to set any other mode. Plus, it’s clear that Casio isn’t trying to hide the solar panels, rather it becomes part of the aesthetic. It’s pretty intuitive, though I did have to do some Googling when I couldn’t figure out how to access certain features and settings.

The Fenix 7 has upgraded the heart rate monitor, so you'll spot a different layout of sensor elements on the rear, although the performance we think is pretty much the same across all models.

Need a map update?

Garmin also added battery modes that allow you to switch power settings on the fly when you need more battery life. More than once, I let my battery drain during testing and was able to eke out a 10K run with less than 5 percent battery remaining thanks to these reduced power modes. Price and availability The buttons also sit nearly flush with the casing, and I didn’t have issues with them digging into my wrist. It’s a nice change from previous Fenix models, where the oversized buttons were quite literally painful. Despite having smaller buttons, they are still easy to locate them without needing to look at the watch. Pacing Like a Pro Another one that looks great on the Venu and Epix, you can throw some shapes onto your screen for a more fun look on your Garmin.

The Fenix 6S performed flawlessly throughout my testing. I compared it to a Forerunner 945 and the Coros Apex, and all the essential metrics — heart rate monitoring, GPS distance, and pace — were spot on across the board. Like most Garmin watches, there is an abundance of data screens, and you can customize them to view the metrics you need the most. Navigation worth following The body battery and recovery time widgets are also useful. Both of these give you a snapshot of how your body is recovering after a workout so that you can plan the rest of your week. MusicBy the way, those battery charts are with the DCR Analyzer. We plot battery life for devices that support writing it to the files, including Garmin, Wahoo, and Stages. One of our faves on the Fenix, Infocal puts the watch time front and center and moves your glanceable data around the edges.

Speaking of that watch face, you’ll notice that there’s a little sun atop the default watch face. That sun is actually showing you the current intensity level. Around the edge of the little sun are 10 pieces, each indicating 10% of full intensity. So if you look at the below picture you’ll see the sun is coming in at 0% intensity as I’m in the shade: It’s also at this juncture that I realized I apparently never edited the video that I shot for it. Huh. There's also a more simplified version available, too, letting you ditch those additional stats to show off time, date, and heart rate only if things get a bit too busy for you. It's a good face to show how you can get that traditional watch face look and still find room for complications to live on it too. With its glass face, I was worried the Fenix would be more like a delicate new iPhone than my old plastic-and-silicone Forerunner. But after 2 months of drops, scrapes, and bangs, I’m happy to report it remains scratch-free. Still – if you want the solar tech in a 6 or 6S form factor – it’s here now, and ready to roll. And, for everyone else that already has a Fenix 6 series, then you’ll benefit from all the new surf/sleep/climbing/bouldering features. So, seems to be win-win for now. It's always a bit annoying when you see a watch face crop up on another Garmin and you scroll through to find out you don't have it in yours. Some of the best Garmin watch faces are the ones that manage to present your stats and data in a really nice, clean manner. Otron definitely fits that bill.
