About this deal

It follows our narrator Eva from childhood when she begins suspecting that her mother isn’t hers. There are no baby photos, no answers to her questions and suddenly, no father to turn to either. Eva’s mother suffers from depression, making her distant and absent emotionally and physically. Eva takes it upon herself to find out what’s missing and document her search in her Quest Book.

Without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read - an extraordinary masterpiece' Anstey Harris, author of The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton The book has plenty of emotional moments where you really feel for Eva, whose mother is quite detached from her and her father leaves them both when Eva is young. Eva has always felt like her mother isn’t actually her birth mother but doesn’t have the proof. This wonder and uncertainty out to be something that affects a lot of her life. Eva gives and receives all her emotional support to her friend Bridget and they vow to be life-long friends. She is ‘adopted’ by Bridget’s family and forms a very strong bond with her mother. One of those rarest of books: so beautiful I almost couldn’t bear it, and so moving I was reading through tears’ STACEY HALLS

About Joanna Glen

All My Mothers offers an insightful look into how one's sense of home can be shaped by multiple experiences. It's like the author looses steam the second our protagonist lands in Cordoba, which is an absolute let down after almost half the book knowing this will be the beginning of Throughout her life Eva has felt that there is something missing in her life. She feels the outsider even when people go out of their way to show her love. Her mother is distant, undemonstrative and spends most of her time in bed. She is neither a loving mother, nor a supportive mother – she is an absence. An absence that is hard for a small girl to understand. Her father is everything and she adores him. When school requires her to bring a photo of herself as a baby she discovers there are no photographs. As she grows she learns that there is nothing of her before the age of three and a half – another unexplained emptiness. An absence that is compounded when her father leaves and her mother is moved to hospital. Right away I'm going to say that this book totally overwhelmed me to the point that I don't really know how to talk about it. I've spent the last couple of days immersed in it and have come away a slightly different person. This was stunning from start to finish. It tells us the story of Eva, a young girl who longs to have the perfect family. Sadly for Eva, ger mother isn't able to be present for her and her father isn't really around. Through this, she's left with the lingering question some young children come up with: maybe these aren't my parents at all.

This book was recommended to me by a very good friend of mine and I have to admit I had my prejudices. A novel about various types of mothers? A coming-of-age story about an ordinary Spanish woman? Normally, not my cup of tea. However, this book is painfully beautiful and incomprehensibly undervalued. Let me tell you why⬇️ A moving tale… sure to make you cry… Parfait [is] a convincingly serious, sweet, clever and funny person who ends up carrying the story… an epic hero … It’s going to be all over every book club in Britain before you can say Burundi” - The TimesReading this book was a little slow and I was a somewhat irritated that it was so much of an effort. However, slowly I became more and more intrigued by Eva and the surrounding characters. I marvelled at her resistance and fortitude and how bravely she confronted the future. I must admit I cried for her. I understand the message was the true mother was her all along, and thus why all the mother characters were diluted as we neared the end. And that made it lose the punch I mentioned before. The book is about the Mothers. Talk to me about the Mothers. I want the Mothers.

All My Mothers is a powerful story of resilience and identity that highlights the strength of familial bonds.

The narrative structure of All My Mothers provides an interesting exploration into the past and present lives of its protagonists. I would recommend it to anyone who liked either my review or the synopsis and think it might appeal to them!

Do you have those books that you love just SO MUCH, hit you so hard and mean so much to you, but you worry that it was more about the circumstance in which you read it than the book itself? The Other Half of Augusta Hope, Joanna Glen’s debut was my favourite book I read last year, and I was worried All My Mothers wouldn’t live up to the hype that I had created for it. The way you’ve always looked so happy to see me every single morning,’ I said. ‘That has honestly changed my life. It’s made me feel as if there must be something nice about me.’ I loved All My Mothers, perhaps even more than The Other Half of Augusta Hope (also by Joanna Glen, which I also really enjoyed). I’d really recommend this beautiful read. My Rating: 4/5Eva has suspicions about her family and raises numerous questions and does some investigating throughout. This goes on for a number of years, along the way we meet some lovely characters and families and one or two not so lovely characters. It’s an immersive story, at times it’s joyful and happy but also at times it’s painful. It's like the author looses steam the second our protagonist lands in Cordoba, which is an absolute let down after almost half the book knowing this will be the beginning of the Actual Quest. Oh my goodness. It's 3am, I have just finished this book and I simply had to review it immediately.
