About this deal

Divided into the 12 months and providing practical information that gives access to the outdoors and the seasons.

I don’t know if it’s the ex-teacher in me, but I always feel September is the beginning of a new start and with The Almanac – A Seasonal Guide to 2023 by Lia Leendertz heading for publication at the beginning of next month, now seems the perfect time to review it. I have picked out some favourites, such as the Folk Song for Aries’ Ram “The Derby Ram” which is especially interesting given where I live. Lia Leendertz has produced another superb gem of a book in “THE ALMANAC” - A seasonal guide to 2023. Certainly there is information about the natural world and I loved the concept of following the life of an ordinary garden pond throughout the year, but there’s so much more besides. Beautifully drawn by Whooli Chen, the monochrome illustrations depicting the essential character of each month in turn are juxtaposed by a calendar of it's main events.

I’m hoping to pick up some gardening tips too, as there is a feature for the best gardening and planting times every month. An Almanac also gives information about the Zodiac, here the author includes an introduction to the zodiac and gives information for Capricorn followed by a folk song. There’s a handy index at the back, a ribboned bookmark, lots of drawings and a textured cover which add to make this a must have book for 2023!

A wonderful accompaniment to your regular diary, once you have one you’ll want one EVERY year and they can be kept on a bookshelf as a reference for previous years. Dipping into these pages throughout the year will give us the insight into why things are celebrated along with nature. Packed full of information including key dates, tide tables, garden tasks, sunrises, moon phases, seasonal recipes, folk songs and more this beautiful little book will help you connect month by month with the seasons of Britain and Ireland. This is a fabulous little book that I adored picking through and if you are a fan of nature, the natural world and planning for gardening, then this is a gorgeous book to have.My garden is tiny but I am learning all the time for when I have a larger garden to turn into a sanctuary for all living creatures to enjoy the natural cycles of the seasons.

I only have a PDF of ‘the almanac - a seasonal guide to 2023’ on loan from Netgalley, and it only lasts for a couple of months, so I may splash out for a copy. Beautifully packaged both outside and in, The Almanac will give you, literally, twelve months of pleasure.Having adopted our first dog over 4 years ago, I found myself starting to appreciate how our local area changes over the year in terms of the natural world on our daily dog walks. I have often bought an Almanac for the coming year and they have varied in quality, usefulness and beauty. The Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to 2023 by Lia Leendertz gives you the tools and inspiration you need to celebrate, mark and appreciate each month of the year in your own particular way.

There are also features on each month's unique nature, such as the meteor shower of the month, beehive behaviour, folklore, seasonal recipes and charts tracking moon phases and tides. This year's focus has been the zodiac but not as a horoscope, but more as the what and why of each month. If I have any criticism at all it’s of myself for not making more of the seasonal recipes or checking the tables for tides or the phase of the moon we’re in. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. The recipes were especially welcome and although not one for astrology, I found the history of the zodiac signs and greek mythology to be fascinating. There is a beautiful drawing for the start of every month, often linked to the zodiac sign which is further detailed in the text. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's pageview limit. As such, it’s the perfect gift for gardeners and nature-lovers, and a great way to inject natural goodness to your day-to-day life. There are also features on each month’s unique nature, with this instalment following the swirling micro world of the garden pond through the year. And so this month we come to glittering, sparkling life, just as nature reaches its most complete hibernation.
