About this deal

Al Ewing and Joe Bennet really lean into the horror aspect of the Hulk with this new approach/title. You’d think the MC’s publicly announced intention to destroy the world would still be a big deal even if it was 20 issues ago, right?

The Immortal Hulk's attachment to the grander picture of comicdom makes for a treacle-thick opening half, as Avengers and generals and long-dead comrades clog up the picture and get in the way of feeling what makes this storyline unique - what makes it worth reading to someone like me, who is interested in a cosmic horror spin, and in the dark on everything else.

Bennett has contributed to Captain America, Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, and worked extensively at DC Comics, including on 52. The other goodreads reviews on here paint a weird picture of expectations, with a lot of people enjoying this continuity-heavy first half and dropping off for the second. I didn't find the horror elements to be all that scary, though it played out more like a cosmic horror idea than an actual horror story, and in that regard, it was well done. It builds with excellent pacing and it shows the darker side of the world, the creepy moonlit crack houses and mountainside caves.

This reminds me a lot of the New 52 Swamp Thing and Animal Man, particularly the faux-Lovecraftian hell dimension stuff, which isn’t a good thing. This one I really like though, with the supernatural element making the big green'un scary again in a way he's not been since the 1960's. The first 5 is an incredible view into the Hulk as a true horror character who can't be killed, loses control, commits atrocities, and is struggling to find his way in life. Job asks his creator w the f is up with all this suffering, and his creator responds, essentially, which of us made the universe, buddy?Since breaking into American comics, he has written Jennifer Blood and spin-off series The Ninjettes for Dynamite Entertainment, and the Age of Ultron tie-in issues of Avengers Assemble for Marvel Comics. And once that’s done, once you’re told outright that what you are looking at is religious symbolism about Man’s place in the universe, and then you realise that you’re actually looking at a big dumb green monster who sells underpants and lunchboxes to kids and the monster is shouting at God "Why Hulk hurt?
